The GMP-led armed struggle

The GMP began armed resistance after the Golaghati incident. Prior to that, it had staged on August 15, 1948 a successful illegal massive demonstration in Agartala demanding a popular government, withdrawal of warrants, removal of the Dewani rule, release of political prisoners and an end to police repression. Its fundamental demand was a responsible government which the Ranadive thesis would dismiss as a ‘reformist demand’. The Statesman, March 3, 1951, 2 summed up the violent activities of the GMP as follows:

The disturbances in which a section of hill tribes has been involved have taken the forms of violent opposition to procurement of rice and paddy at the prices fixed by the government, clashes between armed bands and police and military personnel, kidnapping of persons suspected of helping the authorities… Individual policemen are also attacked and their rifles taken away.

This was only a partial reflection of reality. The dimensions of the movement were much wider than this pro-government daily asserted (Devbarma 1987).
